F*ck Being Humble

F*ck Being Humble | Stefanie Sword-Williams |Quadrille Publishing Ltd | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Whether it is through our parents, our education, our bosses, our colleagues, or the media we consume, we are constantly told that being humble is essential to our professional success. It's often seen as distasteful or arrogant to shout about our achievements. But in a modern workplace, where the conventional, steady, linear career path is becoming rarer and rarer, this advice seems ever-more obsolete. In the age of flexible working and portfolio careers, it's time to f*ck being humble.”

This book is firmly in my read again “pile”. FIVE STARS chef kiss It’s one of these books that made me slap my own forehead and exclaim at 1am from the comfort of my bed OF COURSE rousing Mr Ro & generating stink eye from the cat.

To sum things up, simply, F*ck Being Humble almost gives you permission to shout about yourself from the rooftops. Those of you who are millenials & from the UK (definitely Scotland; unsure about rUK) you’ll remember that maroon folder known as The National Record of Achievement. This was a folder given out in around 3rd-4th yr at high school where you could keep all your awards, personal statements, exam results, etc to proudly show to any future employer, college, university & granny.

In theory these things were a great idea but at my high school after the initial song & dance you were left to it. Teachers have enough to be getting on with, after all. I still have mine & listen when I say (haaaaaaaaaay it’s murder on the dance floor… sorry, Sophie Ellis-Bextor has erupted on Instagram again) that my NRA is THE BIGGEST PILE OF CRINGE IN ALL CRINGEDOME. It’s generic, utter mince that was almost a carbon copy of the 120+ kids in my year. Ok, granted, I doubt many children from age 14 up have remarkable achievements other than getting out of bed & onto the bus to school but there was no spice, no pizzazz. For a millenial such as myself it was touted as an exercise in listing facts (never embellish or lie). These would sell you & hold you in good stead. Yeah, thanks boomers.

Being a creative sort (if you hadn’t already noticed) I have to flaunt myself, write artist statements, talk enthusiastically about whatever work I was producing (even if it wasn’t my fav piece). It’s a very hard thing to do & especially when promotion was seen as “showing off”. Well, I’m here to say, thanks to F*ck Being Humble that I am going to shout from the rooftops about my work, what my goals are, ambitions, interests and probably yes (much to Mother’s chagrin) what the cat is up to (rn sleeping, if you’re interested).

It’s also because of this book that I wanted to start writing about what I’m reading & what I took away from it.

Read this book, it’ll give you a kick in the bottom to really push yourself. You’re wonderful & unique & there are people out there who are as weird (if not weirder) than you who will be interested in what you have to say.
